“Fibres, Materials and Stitches” with Alison Ellen

For our meeting on 20 January we were delighted to welcome renowned knitter and author Alison Ellen (alisonellenhandknits.co.uk). Attendance was 34 Members and Guests.
Alison talked about how knitted stitches can alter fabric, and how different fibres affect the way stitches work. She included a section on her experiments into knitting with plant material.
Alison has run a small business designing and making hand knits for 35 years, dyeing her own yarns. She teaches short courses in the UK and abroad, and has published 4 books on designing in knitting. She has exhibited her work since the 1980s: in 2016-19 in a touring exhibition with weavers Ann Richards and Deirdre Wood, ‘Soft Engineering, textiles taking shape’, as part of SIT textiles symposium in Stroud; at NCCD, Sleaford, Lincolnshire; City Space, Winchester Discovery Centre, and, in 2019, at the Whitchurch Silk Mill
